French-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting Services for ENTPE

This month we had the pleasure of assisting The École Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’État (ENTPE) with their simultaneous interpreting needs during their 5-day French-Chinese Summer School held in the Rhone-Alps Expo Pavilion in Shanghai.

ENTPE is an engineering school part of the French Grandes Écoles, under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Sea, and part of the University of Lyon network.

The theme of the 5-day summer university was sustainable construction, specifically a discussion of French and Chinese practices along the life of a sustainable building, including planning, construction, uses and lifespan, as well as a building’s integration within the city. Speakers included engineers, scientists, architects and researchers, for a total of 16, all experts in their respective field.

French-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreters

Eurologos Shanghai’s work began with the selection of a pair of French-Chinese simultaneous interpreters with a suitable technical background for the event, and subsequently focused on collecting the presentation materials, supports, and glossaries from each speaker. This is a very important step in the preparation of any simultaneous interpreting, but always a major source of problems if not handled timely and properly, especially when so many speakers are involved. Eurologos Shanghai’s experienced project managers made this process easy, following up individually with each speaker and making sure all the correct and complete materials were provided in a timely manner, so that both interpreters were given sufficient time for their preparation.

ENTPE also placed Eurologos Shanghai in charge of the simultaneous interpreting equipment installation and management, which as always was expertly coordinated by our onsite project manager and technician. Eurologos Shanghai’s work also included all coordination with the Rhone-Alps pavilion staff prior to the event to ensure that the necessary audio and video cabling, among other technicalities, was made available within their conference hall for correct installation of the simultaneous interpreting equipment.

2011 Automotive Manufacturing Solutions China Conference

This month we had the pleasure of assisting AMS, one of the leading international automotive events organizers, with their annual ‘Automotive Manufacturing Solutions China Conference’, one of the biggest events on the automotive conferences calendar.

The focus of this year’s conference was on quality and efficiency and how these factors can be improved within the local automotive industry. Guest speakers included senior executives and managers from all the main automotive players in China including General Motors, BMW Brilliance, FAW-Volkswagen, Ford, Schneider Electric, Beijing Benz and many more.

Smooth and Seamless Execution

Work began on the eve of the event with the set-up of the interpreting booths and wiring of the transmitters for wireless headset use in two separate halls (the conference was split over two rooms), our technicians working under the watchful eye of our Project Manager, responsible for coordinating the event from start to finish. Our technicians are also constantly present during the event, available to offer immediate assistance if required.

On the day of the event, our Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting teams (two interpreters for each hall) arrived in good time. We require our interpreters to be on site 45 minutes before the start of the event in order for them to have sufficient time to test and adjust the equipment, familiarise themselves with the layout of the location, and do some final preparation.

The interpreting team is always carefully selected according to their profile and experience and approved with the client before the start of the event. Prior to the event, we ensure that the interpreters carefully study all of the background materials provided by the client and arrive at the event fully prepared. All of this under the ever watchful eye of our Project Manager, ensuring a smooth and seamless execution of everyone’s duties.

Eurologos Shanghai was honoured to recently provide high-end luxury cosmetics brand Helena Rubinstein with French to Chinese simultaneous interpreting services for their “Talk with the Master” event held in the Hilton Beijing.

The name “Lancôme” was inspired by the ruins of a castle, Le Château de Lancosme, with the roses in the area inspiring the company’s symbol of the single golden rose.

Helping Maersk Translate Customer Advisories for their Mainland China Operations

Eurologos Shanghai has been assisting Maersk offices both in Shanghai and Hong Kong with their translation needs for almost 2 years now.

With the evolving of our relations and the increased trust Maersk’s offices have garnered towards Eurologos Shanghai’s capabilities, since the second part of 2010, Maersk’s office in Hong Kong took the decision to expand the scope of our cooperation to include the translation from English into Chinese of all customer advisories issued to their Mainland China customers.

Rapid Response

One of Maersk’s essential requirements for this task is rapid turnaround times.

Customer advisories are sent for translation during the course of the day and, in the case of urgent communications, are sometimes required within just several hours.

A team of two translators is constantly on stand-by, effortlessly alternating as translator and reviser, to provide Maersk with 9 hours of service coverage from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday Shanghai local time.

Milano Fashion Global Summit 2010: Shanghai Special Edition

Eurologos Shanghai was proud to recently assist in the organising of the Milano Fashion Global Summit 2010 held in Shanghai for the very first time this October.

The Milano Fashion Global Summit is a key event held yearly to discuss the achievements and future development plans of Italian fashion on the global scene, both from a fashion and a business development perspective.

The long list of VIP speakers included heavyweights such as Santo Versace, President of Gianni Versace, John Hooks, Deputy Chairman of the Armani Group, and Michele Norsa, CEO of Salvatore Ferragamo, among many others from all of the top Italian fashion houses.

Traditionally each year, the Merck family and the company’s major shareholders will organise a visit to one of their worldwide offices to connect with the local workforce and share ideas and concerns. October 2010 will see the Merck Family visiting Shanghai, which will also be an opportunity for the family to visit the Universal Expo currently being held in the city.

Having successfully worked together on a number of other projects, Merck had no hesitation in contacting Eurologos Shanghai to entrust them with the task of providing consecutive-level interpreters for this very special and important event on the Merck calendar.

To emphasise the importance of this visit, Merck insisted on being provided with a series of profiles of potential interpreters from which to select from, interpreters which were interviewed individually and eventually whittled down to two.

Currently, the selected interpreters are busy preparing for the event by working their way through a series of materials provided by the client to ensure they are well versed in all that is Merck. All of this under, of course, the ever watchful eye of the Eurologos Shanghai Project Managers.

Understanding what defines Chinese luxury to adapt a text successfully

Eurologos Shanghai was extremely proud to recently assist the world renowned fashion label Chanel in the translation of a number of their press releases and marketing materials.

As English and Chinese are two such diverse languages, a mere literal translation is never sufficient in any context, and marketing-related texts for luxury products—moreover abstractly written—are no exception, requiring careful adaptation, sometimes even complete departures from the original source meaning, in order to make them appropriate and appealing within the unique Chinese reality.

In selecting the team to tackle this task (translator plus reviser of course!), our main aim was not only to find translators with experience within the luxury fashion brand realm, but translators who truly understood what defines ‘Chinese’ luxury—only by utilising translators with this knowledge and skill could we guarantee the Client texts not only translated but truly adapted, suitably and accurately, to the local market.

Prompt follow-up

Knowing very well that the task at hand was not an easy one, upon delivery of the translation, we promptly reminded Chanel of our complete availability to follow-up any modifications that may be required to the text following their own internal review—an often un-emphasised, but key step in the translation process.

The Client did in fact return to us with a series of modifications (not errors may we emphasise, merely the Client’s personal preference of one form of expression and/or term over another), which we were glad to promptly follow-up for the successful completion of the translation.

A Creative Conglomerate

Gathering together an international community of creative disciplines, Neon Shanghai aims to become a go-to place for all sorts of aesthetic projects, both by manufacturing concepts and premiering exhibits. Set in an old factory, just south of Shanghai Stadium, the second floor has been renovated into a large, open-plan office, encompassing a photography studio and a film production room.

Forming a mini-conglomerate, Neon Shanghai is actually four separate companies, working in four different industries. Italians, English, Chinese and Canadians bring intercultural perspectives to bear on their varied professions, which include film and video, language translation, marketing and communications, and photography.

As a relatively young group of entrepreneurs, the group is symptomatic of modern Shanghai, using innovation to try to carve out its own niche in the growing economy of China. There are already many big-name brands counted among their commercial clientele. The Junction, the photography arm of Neon Shanghai, has worked on many cosmetic images for Bulgari, Lancome and Dior. Over the other side of the office, Tee-hee’s marketing campaigns largely serve the same industry, working with L’Oreal, Kerastase and Technogym. Translating and interpreting for Siemens, Toyota and Red Bull, Eurologos also moves in global corporations, despite the huge competition in Shanghai around this profession. Some of the most interesting projects, however, stem from Lost Pensivos, the film and television arm. It’s worked on commercials for the World Expo 2010 and the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix, as well as providing production assistance for a diverse range of companies, including BBC, Sony, McDonald’s, Unilever and The Discovery Channel.

The directors also aspire to help other members of today’s up-and-coming youth by hosting events from painters, sculptors and other artists. Conceptualizing their entire company, the idea is that this converted industrial building will become the location for an inventive hub, stimulating today’s youth. “The whole office can become an event space,” explains Marketing Director Raimondo Gissara, as he indicates how the majority of the area functions well to handle the ebb and flow of party attendees: sounds like they’ve come up with the ideal way to combine work and play.
